Boosting Natural Immunity With Sun Exposure & Essential Oils
It’s the end of the cold months, where short days and an absence of sun, present us with many challenges. Somewhat unsurprisingly, a lot of us have fallen ill at this time, and those that haven’t, are feeling less robust than they usually do in the summer months. There’s a very simple reason for this…
Natural Immunity & Sunlight
We need sunlight, or infrared radiation, exposure in order to make a couple of vitally important bodily components, which are required for proper immune function. This means we need to get out into direct sunlight daily. And, we need to stop wearing sun block.
However, the sun is too low in the sky in the UK between the months of October and April, to provide us with the benefits we need for proper immune regulation. This is why so many of us fall ill in February and March each year.
We have been starved of vitally important sunlight for months at this point, and whilst our bodies can store some of these important constituents, that we gained through sun exposure in the summer months, by February and March we have most certainly run out of natural reserves.
However, direct sun exposure is critically important every day of the year. And, unfortunately, sunlight through glass doesn’t work.
Sunshine & Sleep & Our Circadian Rhythm
One of the key reasons we need daily sun exposure, every day of the year, is because it impacts the quality of our sleep and directly influences energy levels. More specifically, we need a minimum of 15 minutes morning sunlight a day because of something called our Circadian Rhythm.
This essentially means that 15 minutes of morning sunlight helps our internal body clock to know what time of day it is, so that it can start budgeting our energy for the day ahead. Dysregulated energy consumption within our body will lead to afternoon slumps and other poor energy performance outcomes.
Without a properly regulated Circadian Rhythm, we are likely to suffer from insomnia also.
Poor energy supplies and distribution in our body, along with disrupted sleep, will stress our body out, and negatively impact immune function. Plus, it will negatively impact a whole lot of other processes besides.
Daily sunshine is as important as a good night’s sleep for our overall health!

Natural Ways Of Avoiding Sunburn
Natural Immunity & Vitamin D & Vitamin A
Sunlight exposure facilitates the production of the following within our body, and are critical for immune-regulation:
- Vitamin D (which is actually a hormone).
- 95% of the melatonin in our body is produced in our mitochondria when we’re exposed to sunshine or infrared radiation. (It is not made in our pineal gland, as we are routinely taught.) Melatonin is required for a good nights sleep.
- Sunlight is also critical for breaking down retinol into component metabolites (known as retinoids), as well as nuclear receptors and retinoic acids, which, like Vitamin D, are also hormones. These are incredibly important, because nuclear receptors are what make our thyroid work. They are also what make Vitamin D work.
According to Morley Robbins, a brilliant researcher:
The important thing for people to realise is that, when we go out in the sunlight, we’re doing two things: We’re activating [vitamin] D, and we’re breaking down [vitamin] A, so that [our] regulatory functions [for which vitamin] A is responsible, begin to take effect. I think Lawson, from 2013, is probably the only author I’ve seen explain the distinction of light for both [vitamin] A and [vitamin] D, and I think it’s really of paramount importance for people to understand.
Sunscreen & Natural Immunity
As mentioned earlier, sunscreen is not a good idea. This is because sunscreen inhibits the natural uptake of the health giving properties of the sun, and thus diminishes natural immunity.
Not only that, most commercially available sunscreens have been shown to be a leading cause of skin cancer. Please do your own research on this, but be aware, the results are unlikely to be pretty!
Many natural carrier oils, such as the ones sold by Wild As The Wind, are thought to provide some protection from the sun. These include Raspberry Seed Oil and Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil etc… (Wild As The Wind also stock a gorgeous Organic Raspberry Seed Oil.)

How To Get Enough Sunlight
Thankfully, white skinned people only need about 15 minutes of sun exposure between the months of April and October in the UK. However, the news is not so good for darker skinned people, I’m sorry to say.
Dark skinned people need 8 hours of sunlight, even in the height of summer in the UK.
For pale skinned people, who are likely to burn in the hotter temperatures, the best way to avoid getting burnt is to gradually increase sun exposure each day. We build up a tolerance to sunlight over time. So, start with the required 15 minutes of sun exposure, and build up from there.
However, just getting your face out into the sun is fine in terms of the impact on your Circadian Rhythm, but it certainly isn’t enough when it comes to Vitamin A and D.
The best use of sunlight by our body happens when we expose as many parts of it to the sun as possible. The best areas of skin to expose are those that rarely see the sun under normal circumstances. So, start rolling up those sleeves and trouser legs as soon as it gets warm enough!
If more people spent time in the sun — not getting sunburned, but getting gradual exposure and gradually building up your skin’s tolerance — Saladino explains that rates of many types of cancers would likely go down and there would be fewer cardiovascular disease deaths and fewer cases of seasonal affective disorder, while improvements would be seen in many other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and schizophrenia. This is the power of the sun.
Organic Nigella Sativa Oil For Immunity
Organic Nigella Sativa Oil is an important supplement for us all to be taking these days. It has always been understood to confer many benefits to our overall health, but recent research has revealed some remarkable results.
Organic Nigella Sativa Oil, in Covid patients, has been shown to:
- Prevent viral replication
- Prevent tissue damage when taken with Zinc
The importance of the second point is that many people who have been infected with spike proteins go on to suffer from tissue damage that leads to:
- Blood clots
- Pericarditis and Myocarditis
- Strokes
- Heart attacks
- Pulmonary conditions
Organic Nigella Sativa Oil, in very small amounts, has been shown to considerably reduce these negative outcomes. And, because it is responsible for so many other benefits in the body, it is something we should all consider taking daily.
It is, in short, a great natural means of bolstering our natural immunity.
*Zinc can dangerously deplete Copper, which is another vital mineral. So, if you are supplementing with Zinc it is highly advisable to supplement with Copper also.
Spike Proteins
Spike Proteins are causing many of the problems and complications for those infected with them.
Spike proteins are on the exterior wall of the coronavirus, and it’s why they are of particular interest at present.
It’s these spike proteins which are ultimately responsible for causing tissue damage within our body if we get infected.
Anything that can protect us against spike proteins is a good thing!
There are also potent essential oils which can help to prevent spike proteins from replicating.
The Wild As thw Wind SP Detox Essential Oil Blend is particularly potent.
The following individual essential oils can also be used on their own:
- Pine Essential Oil
- Wormwood Essential Oil
- Ravensara Essential Oil
- Black Spruce Essential Oil
- Fir Needle Essential Oil
- Juniper Needle Essential Oil
- Fennel Essential Oil
- Star Anise Essential Oil
Antiviral Essential Oils
Some of the most potent antiviral essential oils are some of the most affordable. They are often antibacterial and antimicrobial also. Theses include, in no particular order:
- Clary Sage Essential Oil*
- Lavender Essential Oil*
- Oregano Essential Oil*
- Thyme Red Essential Oil*
- Cinnamon Essential Oil*
- Clove Essential Oil*
- Copaiba Essential Oil
- Niaouli Essential Oil*

- Black Spruce Essential Oil
- Laurel Leaf Essential Oil
- Patchouli Essential Oil
- Ravensara Essential Oil*
- Tea Tree Essential Oil*
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil*
However, my personal favourite antiviral aromatherapy oil is Cistus Essential Oil. It is a little more expensive, but worth it in my experience.
******Organic and wildcrafted versions of these aromatherapy oils are available, in most cases, from Wild As the Wind. (Sadly I only supply essential oils in the UK. I know I have a lot of readers in the US, and I’m so sorry that it’s illegal to send fluids to the US, or else I would happily do it in a heartbeat…)
There are a good number of aromatherapy oils which individually possess antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic properties. These are marked with an asterisk* above.
Wild As The Wind offer several blended oils, containing aromatherapy oils that are antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic. These include:
