Essential Oils Versus Fragrance Oils
There’s one question which I find desperately dispiriting. It sucks the energy right out of me. And, I am asked it several times a day.
How much do your Essential Oils cost?
I try to remain completely calm as I explain the following…
Only synthetically engineered fragrance oils can ever ALL share the same price, and the reason for that isn’t a good one. Fragrance Oils are manufactured in a lab using chemicals that have a negative impact on every living creature.
All Fragrance Oils are toxic. Many are carcinogenic.
Quite often the places where these toxic fragrance oils are manufactured are in the filthy back streets of grimy cities in South East Asia, where subsistence workers toil in terrible conditions. With no protection against the toxic, caustic chemicals they are using, and no understanding of the dangers, people in T-shirts, shorts and flip-flops mix up drums of *foul smelling gloop in sweatshop conditions.
*Foul smelling = my opinion
So Many Of Us Are So Out Of Touch!
Only people who are completely out of touch with their own nature and the natural world could ever ask a question like this about essential oils.
The modern world has made us lazy and irresponsible… so much so, that many of us, sadly, have no idea where our food comes from, let alone essential oils!
We have all been systematically indulged with addictive convenience foods and artificial substitutes whilst at the same time deprived of the truth about what these products are doing to us. We have been told these synthetic products are good for us when the opposite is true.
Common sense suggests natural options are the healthy choice, but we are consistently fed information subtly telling us synthetic products are best via so many different means. Sometimes the delivery of this manipulative information is obvious but quite often it’s imperceptible, allowing it to inculcate our cultures as though it’s accepted fact.
The motive for the delivery of this deceptive messaging is, as always, profit!
The drive to put profit before people seems totally pervasive within corporate culture these days.
Thankfully, there is something we can do about that. We can choose to question the marketing messages we are being fed, however romantic and alluring, and we can vote with our feet.
Taking responsibility for our own health and learning about all of the many toxic products out there is one of the most defiantly liberating things we can ever do for ourselves… and, acting on our new understanding by deciding to only ever buy natural products, will make us feel better in every conceivable way!
Just the simple act of choosing to stop investing in a company which is actively doing you harm is a very empowering act of self-love! ♥ ♥ ♥ And, it’s an upward spiral from there on in! ♥ ♥ ♥
***There’s a list of all the products which contain synthetic chemical fragrances later on this article.
If An Essential Oil Company Sells Fragrance Oils – Run!
If an essential oil supplier also stocks fragrance oils, then the situation is clear. Any essential oil business, which is willing to sell fragrance oils alongside healing essential oils, only has an eye on their profit and has no concern for your health!
Obviously, a business needs to make profit to stay in business… but at what cost?
Should a business make a profit from selling products which inflict harm on their consumers?
May Be They Don’t Know Fragrance Oils Are Dangerous?
Any business selling essential oils knows that much of their customer base is interested in complementary health. So, any business selling essential oils has a fiduciary responsibility to their customers to know the health giving properties of the essential oils they stock.
Properly produced essential oils come with all manner of paperwork.
Wild As the Wind will not buy an essential oil unless it comes with the following:
- Certificate Of Analysis / GCMS Report
- Material Safety Data Sheet
- IFRA Statement
- Allergy Advice (where appropriate)
- Organic Certificate, where appropriate
This paperwork determines provenance and quality. Any businesses selling essential oils should know that this paperwork is necessary and they should be able to interpret the data to determine if the essential oils they are buying are of therapeutic grade.
If they don’t know this then they have NO BUSINESS selling essential oils!
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
I personally don’t like the term Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils because it suggests something which is fundamentally unfounded. The term Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils suggests there is an industry standard against which essential oils are measured. And, this just isn’t the case.
The term Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils was created, in desperation, by those wishing to differentiate their healing essential oils from all of the dreadful, toxic fragrance oils and adulterated essential oils being sold everywhere in the UK.
So there is no scientific basis to the term Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, nor is their a governing body through which Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils status is awarded.
The term Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils is just arbitrarily used by essential oil vendors to describe their essential oils, whether or not the aromatherapy oils in question are of Therapeutic Grade or not.
However, if anyone were to ask me if Wild As The Wind Essential Oils are Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, I would answer affirmatively. And, I would be telling the truth. Wild As The Wind Essential Oils are some of the most healing essential oils ever produced.
But sadly, those selling inferior essential oils, and even adulterated aromatherapy oils, are likely to tell you their products are just as good. And, they won’t just tell you their tainted oils are Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, they will also tell you they are organic, ethically sourced, fair trade and wild crafted, plus anything else they think you want to hear.
Vendors who are willfully prepared to stock products they know will cause harm, such as adulterated aromatherapy oils and fragrance oils, will also knowingly tell you anything to make a sale.
Why Are Fragrances So Bad For Us?
Any form of fragrance is bad news. They are ALL toxic.
Anything which places a toxic burden on our body interferes with the proper function of our immune system and other systemic factors. Toxins compromise the ability of our body to function properly, and they do so at a very rudimentary level.
Our body maintains a state of balance by manufacturing chemical messengers so that one part of our body can communicate with another, ensuring that a constant state of regulation can be maintained.
These chemical messengers are called Neurotransmitters and Hormones, and fragrance oils and adulterated essential oils interfere with the proper functioning of both.
The dis-regulation of our Neurotransmitters and Hormones will ultimately lead to:
- Weight gain
- Mood disorders
- Anxiety & depression
- Skin problems
- Loss of our sense of smell and taste
- Neuropathy
If fragrance oils and adulterated aromatherapy oils were the only toxins we were being expected to deal with then the chances are they wouldn’t cause chronic systemic failures in most of us. However, we are living in such a polluted world that any additional toxic burden may be enough to push us over the edge!
We cannot afford to expose ourselves to any more toxicity!
Toxins Bio-Accumulate
One of the key issues of living in an overly toxic world is that it overwhelms our body’s ability to process the sea of toxins we’re exposed to at the rate needed for the toxins to present no danger.
Have you ever wondered why even young girls have got cellulite these days? Well, that’s because when our body can’t process the scale of toxins we’re exposing it to, it starts storing them… in our fat… out of harms way… or so it thinks!
Over time we bio-accumulate huge amounts of toxins, and that’s when the toxic burden becomes especially dangerous. There’s only so many places the body can hide away neutralised toxins before they start showing up where they can do maximum harm.
Most people have heard about the aluminum / Alzheimer’s connection. Well, aluminum loves to make it’s way to the brain, which is 60% fat!
Plus, any effort to lose weight will result in the release of toxins back into the bloodstream.
The mobilisation of toxic material means *neuro-degenerative products and poisons could end up anywhere in the body. This is especially true if our daily exposure to toxins leaves us too over burdened with toxins for our Livers to cope. It is our Liver which safely processes toxic substances out of the body. But, if the toxic burden we place on our body exceeds what we our Livers are able to process then this is when we develop mental and emotional issues as well as physical diseases.
*neuro-degenerative products are things which affect the function of the nerves and brain etc.
The Scale Of The Fragrance Oil Problem
Fragrance oils account for 0.3% of the UK GDP, (gross domestic product), which essentially means it is a third of one percent of all of the UK’s output.
THAT’S MASSIVE!
Fragrances go a long way towards making cosmetics and toiletries more toxic than they need to be… Although, most cosmetics and toiletries are rammed with toxic ingredients anyway.
Anything which contains a scent within your home contains a toxic slew of nasty chemicals… This includes your:
- Cleaning Products
- Medications
- Hand sanitiser & soap
- Scented candles
- Perfumes
- Air fresheners
- Cosmetics
- Toiletries
- Scented tissues and toilet paper
- Laundry detergents & washing up liquid
- Dishwasher tablets

Be Careful What You Wish For
We use air freshening products to avoid smelling unpleasant odors, but is this the smartest way forward?
Our noses are responsible for one of our five all-important senses which we use to safely navigate our world. Our sense of smell is there to warn against fires and spoiled food… it’s there to keep us safe!
Many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat your nasal passages and temporarily block your sense of smell,” reports National Geographic’s The Green Guide. Some of the most offensive ingredients—volatile organic compounds (VOCs), benzene and formaldehyde—can cause headaches and nausea and aggravate asthma, and have been linked to neurological damage and cancer.
Perhaps even more worrisome, though, are dispersants known as phthalates that cause hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. A 2007 review by the non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that 12 out of 14 widely available air fresheners contained phthalates. Some of the air fresheners that tested positive for phthalates were labeled as “all-natural” or “unscented.
This except from Scientific America, whilst painting a pretty grim picture, sadly doesn’t tell the full dismal story. Long term exposure to bio-accumulating toxic chemicals can have permanent effects, and are not temporary at all. This means that chemicals designed to disrupt our sense of smell can have an increasingly permanent effect over time.
Essential Oils Are Antibacterial & Antiviral
Did you know that most essential oils are antibacterial as well as antimicrobial? Plus there’s a good number of antiviral essential oils as well
This means we can substitute essential oils for all of the nasty, toxic chemicals and we will achieve much better results all round.

Here’s some of the added benefits…
Putting a few drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil in our washing machine, (for any type of wash), and our dishwashers, will keep all of the pipes free from a nasty buildup of potentially dangerous and malodorous germs.
Using the essential oils in Thieves Essential Oil 2020 blend, diluted in distilled white vinegar, to clean your home, will make it a whole lot safer than if you use chemical cleaners. (You have never used anything which comes close to getting rid of limescale so well.)
Plus, essential oils only kill pathogenic germs, leaving the beneficial bacteria, which is so vital for our health, available to us. Read Gut Health for more information.
Because most chemical cleaners kill bacteria indiscriminately this is potentially very harmful to us, our children and our pets.
For example, there is absolutely NOTHING good about a conventional hand sanitser. They are always harmful to our health because we need good bacteria to maintain our health!
Organic Tea Tree Essential Oil is also available as well as.ethically sourced Tea Tree Essential Oil.
Adulterated Essential Oils
Sadly, even essential oils can be toxic.
Where there is an opportunity for monetary gain there will always be a temptation to dilute and chemically manipulate for profit. Sadly, because essential oils are so valuable, and so popular, the opportunities to make vast sums through manipulating them are widespread. Anywhere between 75% and 98% of all essential oils produced end up being adulterated
Adulterated essential oils are often no better than synthetic perfumes. Many adulterated essential oils are extremely toxic. Some are even potentially carcinogenic, making them really no different to synthetic fragrances.
Adulterated essential oils are even more harmful to children and babies, but the vast majority of baby and children’s products are heavily scented with chemical fragrances and adulterated essential oils.
This is why it’s so important to buy your essential oils from a supplier you trust.
A lot of the essential oils you can buy online are not to be trusted.

Hi Rachel,
I came across your site yesterday when I was tearing my hair out over ‘how do you choose an essential oil brand’. I used to use aromatherapy a lot years ago and had my go to (now long gone) wonderful supplier. Where to begin?
I cannot thank you enough for the generosity of your (free!!) advice. I have yet to place an order but will soon when I decide on my priorities. I have also found so many good and reliable sources all by following your links. This is such a relief after a disastrous order from an allegedly ‘safe and reliable’ site which sent me frankincense (and more) that smelled revolting…and it so shouldn’t ????
I am wanting to improve my knowledge of using oils for my friends and also for me (why am I an afterthought?) So can I pick your brains about age spots? You recommend Frank/Ylang but I’m wondering how best to apply them? Together perhaps, as facial oil/gel? Plai sounds a wonder too, just generally..
So glad I’ve found you but wish you were nearer to the North!
Gill
Rachel Wild says
Hi Gill, thanks very much for your comment, although I am very sorry to hear about your experience buying essential oils online. Rest assured Wild As The Wind oils are all exceptional, and are particularly well known for incredible Frankincense Oils.
Instead of making your own face oil, however, I strongly recommend getting a FACIAL OIL STARTER KIT so you can try FACIAL OIL No. 2 & FACIAL OIL No. 8…
This is a recent review for No. 8 :: In just two weeks of using FACIAL OIL No 8 the improvement to my skin is really noticeable. The tone is more even, pores are refining, scarring is disappearing and sun damage is improving.
After applying it to my face, I rub the residual into my hands. I had had papery skin and liver spots (too much gardening). Already the texture of my skin is so much more youthful and all but one of the liver spots have gone (that stubborn one is disappearing and I’m sure it will be gone soon).
This product is amazing. I am so impressed I have just bought some for my daughter.
But there are several reviews explaining how No. 2 has reduced the appearance of age spots also.
Both No. 2 & No. 8 contain Frankincense.
I recommend using the Wild As The Wind Information Website for learning more about essential oils and natural health in general. Please share this link with your friends seeing as they are also interested.
